In cooperation with the Centre for Christian-Muslim Understanding & Partnership (CCMUP) and Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism, Diwan Bookstore hosted a seminar titled the Challenges Facing Christian-Muslim Relations in the Internet Age on Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at its Zamalek branch.
The seminar featured Bishop Dr. Mouneer Anis, Director of CCMUP, and Dr. Riham Salama, Director of the Al-Azhar Observatory for Combating Extremism. The discussion was moderated by Dr. Gihane Zaki, a Member of the Egyptian Parliament and Professor of Ancient Egyptian Civilization.
Speakers discussed the challenges posed by the internet on interfaith relations and how to address them, particularly the spread of hate speech and extremism. They also highlighted the opportunities the digital age presents in fostering understanding and cooperation between communities, emphasizing that the internet’s impact depends on how it is used and regulated.
The seminar concluded with a musical performance by Dalia Ihab Younis, accompanied by the Pianist Kareem Gerges (CCMUP’s Director of International Partnerships & Communications). Dalia performed “Make Me a Channel of Your Peace”, an Arabic adaptation of a prayer inspired by the life of Saint Francis of Assisi. She composed the lyrics in Arabic, drawing from the saint’s message of peace and tolerance among people.

Saint Francis of Assisi (1181–1226 CE) is one of the most influential religious figures in Christian history, renowned for his commitment to peace and interfaith dialogue. During the Crusades in the 13th century, he traveled to the East and met Sultan Al-Kamil of Egypt, taking an unprecedented step toward promoting dialogue and mutual understanding instead of conflict and hatred.
The famous prayer “Lord, Make Me an Instrument of Your Peace”, which emerged in 1912 and was inspired by Saint Francis’ life, remains a universal symbol of tolerance and nonviolence to this day.
St. Francis is the founder of the Franciscans, a Catholic monastic order.
