Cairo, Egypt
Archbishop-Emeritus Dr. Mouneer Anis attended the funeral service of His Holiness Pope Francis, on behalf of Archbishop Dr. Samy Fawzy, Archbishop of the Anglican Province of Alexandria, and on behalf of the Centre of Christian-Muslim Understanding & Partnership (CCMUP).
The funeral service was held at St. Joseph Franciscan Church in downtown Cairo. It was presided over by Archbishop Nicolas Henry, the Vatican Ambassador to Egypt, and attended by senior officials, public figures, community leaders, prominent political and religious leaders, as well as community members.
Archbishop-Emeritus Dr. Mouneer Anis expressed his deep sorrow at the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis, offering heartfelt condolences to members of the Catholic Church across the world during this time of grief.
Pope Francis was a beacon of peace, tolerance, and cooperation among followers of different religions and cultures. His historic signing of the Document on Human Fraternity in Abu Dhabi in 2019 with His Eminence the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar Al-Shareef, Sheikh Dr. Ahmed Al-Tayeb, stands as a testament to his profound commitment to these values—values which the Centre of Christian-Muslim Understanding & Partnership is equally dedicated to advancing and upholding.
We are proud to have both the Catholic Church and Al-Azhar Al-Shareef among our key partners in promoting the values of peace that Pope Francis lived for.
May his legacy continue to inspire generations to come.
