Cairo, Egypt – Monday, 30 March 2026

The Centre of Christian-Muslim Understanding and Partnership (CCMUP) took part in the St. Patrick’s Day celebration hosted by the Embassy of Ireland in Egypt in Cairo, marking an occasion that brought together diplomatic, cultural, and interfaith partners in a spirit of friendship and shared heritage.

CCMUP was represented by Bishop Dr. Mouneer Anis, Director of the Centre; Dr. Rev. Matthew Anderson, Director of Academic Studies; and Mr. Kareem Gerges, Director of International Partnerships. The delegation met with H.E. Mr. Aidan O’Hara, Ambassador of Ireland to Egypt, as well as with Mr. Muhammad Mustafa, Policy Officer at the Embassy, who warmly welcomed the team. Both sides expressed their shared commitment to strengthening ongoing cooperation in promoting peace, dialogue, and tolerance within Egyptian society.

CCMUP and the Irish Embassy enjoy a strong and longstanding partnership, having collaborated on several cultural and peacebuilding projects. This relationship reflects a broader history of cooperation between Ireland and the Anglican Diocese of Egypt, particularly in the fields of humanitarian service and community development.

A notable example of this enduring legacy is the Harpur Memorial Hospital in Menouf, which is owned and managed by the Anglican Diocese of Egypt. The hospital traces its origins to the pioneering work of Dr. Frank Harpur, an Irish physician whose early medical mission laid the foundation for over a century of service. Since its formal establishment in 1910, the hospital has provided affordable healthcare to tens of thousands of patients from diverse religious backgrounds, serving both Christians and Muslims without discrimination.

The Centre’s team also highlighted the deep historical and spiritual connections between Ireland and Egypt. The legacy of Saint Patrick is closely linked to the influence of early Egyptian monasticism. The spiritual traditions of the Egyptian Desert Fathers, such as Anthony the Great and Pachomius, played a formative role in shaping early Irish Christianity. These influences are reflected in Ireland’s monastic practices, artistic expressions, and theological traditions, which bear enduring traces of Egypt’s ancient spiritual heritage.

This rich intersection of histories underscores the profound and often overlooked connections between the two cultures. While Saint Patrick himself was not Egyptian, the spiritual foundations he helped establish in Ireland were deeply influenced by the ascetic and monastic traditions that originated in the deserts of Egypt.

Through its participation in this significant cultural event, CCMUP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting dialogue, strengthening international partnerships, and building bridges of understanding across cultures and faith traditions; continuing its mission to promote peace and inclusive coexistence in Egypt and beyond.

I respect and admire Angela Merkel. She is a great Chancellor. She is a lady of principals. Standing by the truth gave her strength and authority. She confronted international problems and made peace for the nations. She opened her country for refugees against all opposition.
